Firefighters from GHFR had a wonderful day, October 6th, educating the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students at George Hildebrand Elementary School. Each year during Fire Prevention Week (October 5-11) our firefighters use the Burke County Firefighter’s Association Fire Safety House to educate the children on different aspects of fire safety. Some of the topics covered are “Stop, Drop and Roll”; “Stay Low and Go” to crawl under smoke and escape a house fire; how to call 911 in case of an emergency; how to create a “Home Fire Escape Plan”; when to check and change smoke detector batteries; and several different aspects of home fire safety. The Fire Safety House is a portable camper that is divided into two levels inside, upstairs and downstairs, this teaches children how to escape from a fire in different living conditions. The Fire Safety House also can produce artificial, harmless smoke to simulate conditions during a house fire. Our department would like to thank the firefighters who participated in the Fire Prevention Day at the school. We would also like to thank the students and teachers of George Hildebrand Elementary School for your participation and attentiveness.
